A Study on the Characteristics of Emission of Carwash Wastewater





Abstract
This study was carried out to discuss the characteristics of raw and treated carwash wastewater from October 1997 to November 1998 in Seoul, During the past two decades, the number of carwashing industries has much increased as the number of cars have increased rapidly. As carwash wastewater contains various kinds of pollutants, it would be environmental problem when treated incompletely and emitted. We need to investigate the characteristics of emitted carwash wastewater and optimal treatment system. The result-s were as follows;
1) Total number of carwash facilities in Seoul was 1.734, It could be devided into 4 categories; automatic (tunnel type, roll-over type) and non-automatic (self-carwash, and hand-carwash). There arc two current wastewater treatment process; continuous flow reactor and batch reactor. Both of these processes used physical and chemical method, and composed of oil-water separation, coagulation-sedimentation, sand filtration and activated carbon.
2) For each type of carwash facilities, 159.0§¤ for auto-carwash, 28.5§¤ for hand-carwash and 45.0§¤for self-carwash was emitted per unit vehicle in average.
3) Average concentrations (unit: mg/§¤ except for pH) of pH, TSS, COD, ABS, n-Hexane extract in the raw carwash wastewater were 7.18, 79.8, 89.4, 0.26, 4.7 in summer and 7.11, 54.2, 123.3, 0.31, 5.04 in autumn respectively. Heavy metal concentration were very low.
4) Average treatment efficiencies (unit: %) of TSS, COD, ABS, n-Hexane extract at the carwash facilities were 61.6, 51.5, 30.9, 0.8 in summer and 52.2, 60.1. 32.0, 22.5 in autumn respectively.
5) It is considered that n-Hexane extract was only problem in these wastewater. It needs to be implemented with special supplementary treatment system to treat n-Hexane.
6) Auto-carwash facilities need more water, thus the introduction of wastewater reuse system should be considered.
